Oddly enough, this business exists because our apartment was burgled in 1995. We returned to the city late on a Sunday night after a long
weekend in the country, and what we encountered was both traumatic and unpleasant - we felt totally violated. On the positive side, it
inspired me to come up with a way to keep an eye on the place.
I installed several cameras inside the apartment and a "sky cam" on the terrace that automatically scans the New York skyline and some
neighborhood streets. All the cameras are programmed to send snapshots up to my Web site at one-minute intervals. The inside cameras are
turned on only when we're away ... but that's us.
It truly is comforting to be able to go to the Web site anytime I want, from anywhere on the planet, and get a timely and accurate read
on what's happening at home. Had this system been in place in '95, we'd have come home much earlier in the day ... and handed the detective
a very recent photograph of the burglar!
This system, or one that just saves live video to your hard drive, could also prove useful in determining if the housekeeper, handyman, or
even the kids arrive on time.
A few years ago I installed a net-cam system in my office, and it quickly resulted in the identification of a building employee who was
caught - live on the internet! - going through my desk drawers. Without the system this would have been just another unsolved crime.
